How to choose a sit-stand desk

Two things decide whether a sit-stand desk actually gets used: whether it reaches your standing height, and whether raising it takes a button press rather than a two-handed wrestle with a crank. Everything on this page settles the second — all of it is electric, dual-motor, and moves at 28–38 mm/s under 40 dB. The first is where the models genuinely differ, and it comes down to the legs. Two-stage or three-stage legs — the decision that matters most

Each leg segment that telescopes is a stage, and stage count sets the travel. The 9am Robin uses two-stage legs and covers 72–116 cm, which suits most adults between roughly 160 and 185 cm and is the reason it is the most affordable complete desk here. Everything else in the 9am range runs three-stage legs, and the extra segment buys range at both ends: the Pesk and Pesk Pro drop to 63 cm and rise to 128 cm, the Robin Pro, Atom and Atom Pro run 65–130 cm, and the Dora Pro reaches 67–132 cm.

The low end matters more than buyers expect. A desk that will not come below 72 cm is too tall for a seated user under about 160 cm, no matter what the chair does. The high end matters if you are over about 185 cm, where 116 cm of travel leaves you stooping slightly while standing. If you are somewhere in the middle and the desk is only ever yours, two-stage is genuinely enough and the saving is real. If the desk is shared, or you are at either end of the height range, pay for three stages.

What the desktop is made of

• Melamine (MFC) — hard-wearing, stable, and the reason the Robin, Robin Pro and Pesk sit where they do on price. The Pesk top is GREENGUARD Gold certified and the Robin Pro's is E0+ grade, both emissions standards worth having in a room you sit in all day.
• Powder-coated MDF — the Atom only. A matte, low-glare, seamless surface that reads more like an object than a desk, which is the point in a bedroom or a study corner rather than a dedicated office.
• FAS-grade solid hardwood — the top grade of the American hardwood grading rules, on the Atom Pro (American ash), Pesk Pro (ash or American walnut) and Dora Pro (American oak). This is the jump from roughly $850 to $1,400 and up. All three carry a 3D contoured front edge, which is not styling — it takes the hard rail out from under your forearms, and you notice it on a long day.

Picking a size

Widths run 1100 mm to 1800 mm across the range. As a rough guide, 1100–1200 mm takes a single monitor and a laptop, 1400–1500 mm is comfortable for dual monitors, and 1600–1800 mm leaves room for a monitor arm plus space to write. Depth is the quieter decision: 600 mm is tight once a monitor is on a stand, 700 mm is the sensible default, and the 750 mm tops on the Pesk, Pesk Pro and Atom Pro give you enough room to push a screen back to a proper viewing distance.

A complete desk, or just the frame

If you already own a desktop you like — a timber slab, a custom top, the surface off your current desk — the Aussie Chair Sit-Stand Desk Frame is the cheapest way into a sit-stand setup and keeps a piece of furniture out of landfill. It is a dual-motor lift sold bare in three spans. Matching desktops are stocked separately in 140 x 70, 160 x 70 and 180 x 80 cm, white or wood, at the same price in every size. Controls, and which features earn their keep

Every desk here holds programmable height presets, stops and reverses on contact, and locks against small hands. Beyond that the controllers separate: an OLED readout on the Robin, Robin Pro, Pesk and Pesk Pro, a white touch panel on the Atom and Atom Pro, and a full-colour panel on the Dora Pro, which also carries a presence-sensing light and calorie tracking. The sitting reminder — a 30, 45 or 60-minute nudge — is the one software feature that measurably changes behaviour, and it is on the whole 9am range. The Pesk and Pesk Pro run German-made Bosch motors, which is a fair reason to prefer them at the same price if quiet matters to you.

Load, and why 125 kg is not the number to watch

Every 9am desk is rated to 125 kg, which no realistic desk setup approaches — two monitors, a dock and an arm rarely clear 40 kg. The rating is a structural test result, not a guide to stability. What you actually feel is wobble at full extension, and that is governed by the frame and the stage count, not the load rating. This is the other argument for three-stage legs and a 700 mm-plus top.
