Which chair is best overall, and which for long hours?

1. Herman Miller Aeron: best overall

The Herman Miller Aeron, Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick's 1994 design remastered in 2016, uses 8Z Pellicle mesh with eight tension zones, PostureFit SL sacral and lumbar support and the Harmonic 2 Tilt. Ours are brand-new and 100% genuine.

Its three sizes span 142–200 cm, the widest fit on this list. Herman Miller's size chart rates Size A to 136 kg and Sizes B and C to 159 kg; its 2026 EMEA product sheet lists 181 kg for Size C, and we plan around the conservative figure. See our Aeron size guide.

Honest con: Herman Miller makes no headrest for the Aeron, and seat depth is fixed for each size.

2. Herman Miller Embody Gaming: best for very long hours and back pain

The Herman Miller Embody Gaming is the Embody co-developed with Logitech G. It keeps Backfit, which sets the backrest to your spine's natural curve, pixelated support that spreads your weight as you move, and a four-layer seat, then adds an extra foam layer and copper-infused cooling foam.

It suits all-day sitters who prefer cushioning to mesh. Seat depth adjusts from 381 to 457 mm.

Honest con: Reviewed's tester found the backrest stops around shoulder height, with no neck support.

Which LiberNovo Omni suits a hot room, or no battery?

3. LiberNovo Omni Pro: best for heat and a ventilated seat

The LiberNovo Omni Pro is the top Omni trim. Its Bionic FlexFit backrest has eight flexible panels on 16 pivot points that reshape as you move, the motorised lumbar travels 50 mm, and OmniStretch runs a five-minute lumbar cycle. Active AirFlow puts a two-speed, 4,000 rpm fan under the seat. It adds Gabriel Atlantic fabric and a die-cast aluminium base, and fits 153–186 cm.

Honest con: only the seat is ventilated, and Tom's Hardware noted the lumbar cannot be adjusted if the electronics fail.

4. LiberNovo Omni SE: best dynamic chair with no electronics

The LiberNovo Omni SE shares the Pro's frame, backrest, headrest and five recline stops from 105° to 160°, but has no motor or battery: a manual dial sets 40 mm of lumbar depth. Choose it to turn a dial rather than charge a chair.

Honest con: Tom's Guide found the dial awkward to reach, and BTOD reported that users at or below about 163 cm struggled with the fit. See our Omni SE vs Gen vs Pro comparison.

What is the best office chair for a big or tall person?

Our pick is the LiberNovo Maxis, which LiberNovo rates for 178–200 cm and up to 181 kg. It is built on the Omni's ideas but re-engineered around a wider, deeper seat, with a fixed 52 cm seat depth, armrests that set 40–60 cm apart, a headrest with 14 cm of height travel and an aluminium base. LiberNovo cites BIFMA X5.11, the large-occupant standard. The Maxis Electric is not sold in Australia.

5. LiberNovo Maxis Airflow

The LiberNovo Maxis Airflow adds motorised lumbar, OmniStretch and the Active AirFlow seat fan, with a Gabriel Atlantic backrest cover. Choose it if you are big and run hot. It comes in Graphite or Glacier.

6. LiberNovo Maxis Manual

The LiberNovo Maxis Manual sets the lumbar by hand, with nothing to charge, in Graphite.

Honest con (both): GameRevolution's reviewer flagged the large footprint, and some buyers on LiberNovo's site say the armrests do not stay put. Read our LiberNovo Maxis guide and best big and tall office chairs roundup.

What is the best chair for a sit-stand desk?

7. HÅG Capisco Puls 8020: best for sit-stand desks and active sitting

The HÅG Capisco Puls 8020, designed by Peter Opsvik and made by Flokk, has a saddle seat with a removable cushion, a height-adjustable backrest, adjustable seat depth and HÅG's inBalance tilt, which tilts 15° back and locks. Seat height depends on the gas lift: 47–65 cm with the standard 200 mm lift, or 40–53.5 cm and 55.5–80.5 cm with the optional 150 mm and 265 mm lifts, per Flokk. Try it if you work at a raised desk or like to move.

Honest con: Flokk's default HÅG rating is 110 kg (136 kg on its US sheet), there is no headrest, and Work While Walking found it less padded than the original Capisco.

What is the best everyday mesh chair?

8. Sihoo DORO C300 Pro V2: best everyday mesh chair

The Sihoo DORO C300 Pro V2 is a full-mesh chair with a headrest, for users 150–190 cm and rated to 150 kg by Sihoo. Over the first-generation C300 it brings DynaCore support linking headrest, back, lumbar and arms, a SyncroFlex backrest that glides as you recline, upgraded Domino sacral-lumbar support with height and three levels, 8D armrests, a 28% wider headrest and 42.9–47.0 cm of seat depth.

Check the product page for the warranty term.

Honest con: Notebookcheck found the headrest pressed on the shoulders of users above about 180 cm, and recline tension cannot be set by hand.

Where do the UE chairs fit?

The UE chairs suit buyers who will sit-test first, because UE publishes less in English than any other brand here. UE (Yongyi), founded in 2001, was China's first listed chair maker (Shanghai Stock Exchange, 2015) and has worked with IKEA since 2012.

9. UE ACT 280 Pro

The UE ACT 280 Pro is from UE's Act series. We quote no fit range, as UE has published no English specification we could verify.

10. UE FLOW 660 Pro

The UE FLOW 660 Pro is new to our range. See the UE range.

Honest con (both): we found no independent English-language review and no model-specific certificate, so sit-test them.

Mesh, foam or dynamic backrest: which suits an Australian summer?

Mesh is the coolest option without electronics, because air passes through the seat and back; the Herman Miller Aeron and Sihoo DORO C300 Pro V2 are mesh on both. OzBargain buyers who praise mesh for hot days still advise trying it first.

Foam is softer but warmer. The Embody Gaming uses copper-infused cooling foam, and LiberNovo puts a fan under the seat of the Omni Pro and Maxis Airflow, though its fabric-over-foam dynamic backrests are not ventilated.

What do AFRDI and BIFMA actually certify?

AFRDI Level 6 is the top level of AS/NZS 4438, the Australian and New Zealand swivel-chair standard. It certifies durability for severe commercial use, not a higher weight limit: Furntech-AFRDI regards AS/NZS 4438 as suitable for people up to about 110 kg. For heavier users, AFRDI 142 certifies rated loads of 135, 160 or 185 kg, for single-shift or multi-shift use.

BIFMA X5.1, the US standard many imported chairs quote, tests around a 115 kg (253 lb) user; BIFMA X5.11, for large occupants, around 181 kg (400 lb). BIFMA does not test chairs and asks makers not to say "BIFMA certified"; Herman Miller lists the Aeron and Embody on BIFMA's BIFMA Compliant registry.

The AFRDI mark on Herman Miller's Australian Aeron page is the Green Tick, a sustainability label, not a durability certificate; for Level 6 or 142, ask for the certificate number.

Will an ergonomic chair fix back pain?

No chair on its own will fix back pain, and we sell chairs. If you are in real pain, see a physio first. A good chair removes aggravation: well-placed lumbar support, a seat depth that supports your thighs and a recline that invites posture changes. Pair it with standing breaks.

FAQ

What is the best ergonomic office chair in Australia in 2026?

For most people it is the Herman Miller Aeron, because its three sizes cover 142–200 cm. The Herman Miller Embody Gaming suits very long days, the LiberNovo Omni Pro suits hot rooms, and the LiberNovo Maxis suits big and tall bodies up to 181 kg.

What is the best office chair for back pain?

The Herman Miller Embody Gaming is our first back-pain pick: Backfit sets the backrest to your spine's curve and pixelated support spreads your weight as you move. The LiberNovo Omni Pro's motorised lumbar and OmniStretch cycle are the alternative. If the pain is real, see a physio first.

What is the best office chair for a tall or heavy person?

The LiberNovo Maxis, which LiberNovo rates for 178–200 cm and up to 181 kg, with a 52 cm seat depth. The Herman Miller Aeron Size C also covers 178–200 cm, rated to 159 kg on Herman Miller's size chart, and the Sihoo DORO C300 Pro V2 is rated to 150 kg.

Is mesh or foam better for hot Australian weather?

Mesh is generally cooler because air passes through the seat and back, so the Herman Miller Aeron and Sihoo DORO C300 Pro V2 suit hot rooms. Foam is softer but warmer; the LiberNovo Omni Pro and Maxis Airflow add an under-seat fan, and the Herman Miller Embody Gaming uses cooling foam.

How long should a good ergonomic office chair last?

Well over a decade for a well-built chair. Flokk's environmental declaration for the HÅG Capisco Puls assumes a 15-year service life, and OzBargain owners report 20 or more years from a Herman Miller Aeron. One OzBargain buyer warns that basic foam padding can flatten within two to three years of heavy use.

Can I claim an office chair on tax in Australia?

Usually, if you use it for work. The ATO lets employees deduct a chair costing $300 or less immediately if it passes four tests, including more than 50% work use; a dearer chair is claimed over its effective life. Claim only the work-use share and check with the ATO or your accountant.

Where can I sit in these chairs before buying?
