How to choose an ergonomic office chair in Australia

Most "ergonomic" chairs sold here are ordinary task chairs with a lumbar bump moulded into the back. A genuinely ergonomic chair supports your lower back through movement rather than in one fixed position, fits your body dimensions rather than an average, and holds its adjustment for years instead of sagging. Brands on the floor here include Herman Miller, LiberNovo, Sihoo and UE.

Mesh or a cushioned seat, and who each suits

Full mesh — the Herman Miller Aeron's 8Z Pellicle, Sihoo's DORO range, the UE Flow 550's mesh seat — suspends your weight across a tensioned surface, so pressure is distributed rather than concentrated and heat escapes instead of building up. In an Australian summer that matters more than buyers expect. A cushioned seat feels softer in the first minute but runs warmer over an eight-hour day: the Sihoo V1 and M18 use foam, the UE Flow 530 and the Flow 550's Premium Cushion option a latex core.

So mesh suits long unbroken sitting, warm rooms and people who run hot; cushion suits shorter sessions and anyone who finds a tensioned seat firm at the front edge. Several sit between the two — the Mirra 2 layers fabric over a flexing polymer back, the Sayl uses a frameless suspension web, the Cosm one continuous elastomeric surface from seat to back, and the Embody a layered suspension seat under upholstery. LiberNovo's Omni family — the Omni SE, Omni and Omni Pro — takes a different route again: upholstered fabric seats rather than mesh, with a centrifugal fan on the Omni Pro that actively pushes air through the cushion, giving cushioned comfort without the usual heat build-up. The Maxis Airflow carries the same active cooling on its big-and-tall frame.

The three kinds of lumbar support

• Static or manually adjusted — you set the height and depth once and it stays. Simple, nothing to fail. Found on the Sihoo M18 and M57, the LiberNovo Maxis Manual, and the Omni SE, which uses a screw dial in place of the motor its siblings carry.
• Self-adaptive — the pad tracks your spine as you move, with no dial to set. Sihoo's BM (Body Movement) Tracking System on the DORO C300 Pro and UE's floating lumbar on the Flow 530 and 550 work this way; the DORO S300 uses two independent pads.
• Motorised — a powered actuator drives the lumbar in and out from a button on the armrest, and on the LiberNovo Omni, Omni Pro and Maxis Airflow also runs OmniStretch, a five-minute cycle that walks the lumbar through its full travel while you stay seated. The most support, and the most to go wrong; worth it if you already have a back problem.

Fit matters more than the feature list

A chair one size too big is worse than a cheaper chair that fits. The Aeron is the clearest example: it comes in sizes A, B and C, and the wrong one will never feel right however you adjust it. Look for sliding seat-depth adjustment if you are shorter-legged (the DORO C300 Pro adjusts 42.7–45.1 cm), and check the stated user-height range on each product page — most chairs here are sized for somewhere inside roughly 150–190 cm, but the bands differ. Knee-to-backside sets seat depth; relaxed elbow height sets the armrests.

Chairs for larger frames — what a weight rating actually means

A weight rating is a structural test result, not a comfort promise: the frame, gas lift and base survived a standardised load, which says nothing about whether the chair fits you. Most chairs here are rated to 150 kg, including the DORO C300 Pro and the HÅG Capisco Puls; the Embody Gaming is 136 kg. The better questions are dimensional: seat width and depth, and whether the backrest reaches your shoulder blades. The LiberNovo Maxis is engineered from the frame up rather than widened afterwards: a 52 cm seat platform, a 63 cm backrest, built for users around 178–200 cm and rated to 181 kg on a BIFMA-certified reinforced frame — offered in Australia as the fully mechanical Maxis Manual or the top-spec Maxis Airflow with motorised lumbar, OmniStretch and Active AirFlow seat ventilation.

Task chair or gaming chair

The dividing line is posture, not styling. A bucket-seat racing chair has fixed bolsters built for a reclined position, and fights the forward lean that most work involves. Both gaming chairs we stock are task chairs underneath: the Sihoo XALLKING X5 Pro is a mesh chair with 6D armrests reclining from 95 to 138 degrees, and the Embody Gaming is a genuine Embody with a copper-infused cooling foam layer added above the seat suspension. If you game and work at one desk, buy the task chair.

Pairing a chair with a sit-stand desk

A sit-stand desk gives you two working heights, not one. If you want to perch rather than fully stand, the seat has to rise to meet the raised desk: the Capisco Puls reaches 720 mm on its standard 200 mm gas lift or 840 mm on the extended 265 mm cylinder, and is intended for desks 72 cm and higher. Feet come next: a footring or footrest stops them dangling, HÅG offers a matching footring for the Capisco, and LiberNovo makes a two-stage footrest for the Omni. Then monitor height, which differs between sitting and standing. Set the desk to your elbow height in each position, then the chair to the desk.

Warranty is the honest quality signal

Manufacturers warrant what they expect to survive, which makes cover a better signal than a spec sheet. The Aeron ships with one year as standard, with a paid 12-year upgrade available; the Embody and Embody Gaming carry 12 years. LiberNovo covers every model with five years on the frame plus two on the motor and electronics. Everything else runs from one year upwards and is stated on each product page, so check it before you commit. Sit in it first

Specifications cannot tell you whether a seat edge presses behind your knees or whether a headrest sits where your neck actually is. Both showrooms are set up for this: bring your laptop, sit in three or four chairs, and give each one ten minutes rather than ten seconds.
