Which big and tall office chair should you buy in Australia?
Over 136 kg, or tall and broad, start with the LiberNovo Maxis; tall and lighter, compare the Herman Miller Aeron Size C and LiberNovo Omni Pro; under 136 kg and set on Herman Miller, choose the Embody. Every weight rating here traces to a published manufacturer or standards document. We also stock Sihoo, UE and Ergomax, but we have not verified their maximum-load documentation to the same standard, so they stay off this list.
Best overall for big and tall: LiberNovo Maxis (up to 181 kg, 178–200 cm)
The LiberNovo Maxis is the only chair in our range engineered for big and tall from the ground up rather than scaled up. Its backrest rises 63 cm from the seat and is 52 cm wide at the waist; the armrests open from 40 to 60 cm and lock in width; the headrest travels 140 mm vertically. Underneath are a reinforced aluminium base and a TÜV Rheinland-certified Class 4 gas lift, with a six-spring recline through five positions from 105° to 160°.
Both Australian configurations are in stock at our Sydney and Melbourne showrooms. The Maxis Manual (Graphite) has a manual lumbar dial and no electronics. The Maxis Airflow (Graphite or Glacier) adds motorised lumbar, OmniStretch and Active AirFlow seat ventilation on a firmer cushion. The Maxis Electric is not sold here. As the authorised LiberNovo retailer for Australia and New Zealand, we cover both in our LiberNovo Maxis review and LiberNovo Maxis Australia guide.
The LiberNovo Maxis in Graphite: a 52 cm seat, a 63 cm backrest and armrests that open to 60 cm.
Best mesh chair for tall sitters: Herman Miller Aeron Size C
The Herman Miller Aeron comes in three sizes, and Size C covers the same 178–200 cm band as the Maxis. Herman Miller's size chart and Australian retailer materials rate it 159 kg; Herman Miller's 2026 EMEA product sheet says 181 kg. We plan around the conservative figure. Every Aeron we sell is brand-new and 100% genuine; choose a size with our Aeron size guide, and see how long an Aeron lasts.

Best Herman Miller under 136 kg: Embody and Embody Gaming
The Herman Miller Embody and Herman Miller Embody Gaming are rated 136 kg and made in one size, with no big-and-tall version. Both offer a seat depth adjustable from 38 to 46 cm and a Backfit backrest set to the curve of the spine; the Embody Gaming adds a seat foam layer and copper-infused cooling foam.
The LiberNovo Maxis (left) beside the Herman Miller Embody Gaming in Sydney: a 52 cm seat against the Embody's 46 cm maximum. The Embody's headrest is a third-party add-on.
Best for tall but not heavy: LiberNovo Omni Pro
The LiberNovo Omni Pro suits sitters from 153 to 186 cm and under 136 kg (BIFMA; 110 kg under EN 1335). It shares the Maxis's Bionic FlexFit backrest, recline positions, aluminium base and the Maxis Airflow's Active AirFlow fan, with a 45 or 48 cm seat chosen at purchase. Build matters as much as height: Gadget Review's 188 cm, 82 kg tester, just above the Omni Pro's range, found the Maxis too big, while BTOD's 178 cm, roughly 136 kg tester (in a sponsored review) had no fit issue. See our LiberNovo Maxis vs Omni Pro comparison.
Is tall the same as heavy?
No. Tall is a geometry problem and heavy is a structural one, and most chairs solve only one. A 195 cm, 95 kg sitter needs seat depth, backrest height and headrest reach. Only the Maxis here has a factory headrest LiberNovo rates for users up to 200 cm; Herman Miller makes none for the Aeron or Embody, by design. LiberNovo does not publish the Maxis seat-height range, so check it against your desk.
A 175 cm, 150 kg sitter needs certified load and seat width more than centimetres. At that weight only the Maxis (181 kg) leaves real margin, and even it misses the 25% rule below; the Aeron Size B's 159 kg chart rating leaves 9 kg. Under 178 cm the Maxis's 52 cm seat can feel deep, and LiberNovo suggests a footrest. Width counts too: the Maxis cushion is about 58 cm wide, while Herman Miller's EU store lists the Aeron Size C seat pan at 54.2 cm.
Leave headroom. US seating retailer Sit Healthier suggests a rating at least 25% above body weight. By that rule of thumb, not a standard, the Maxis suits sitters up to about 145 kg, the Aeron Size C (at 159 kg) about 127 kg, and 136 kg chairs about 109 kg.
What do AFRDI Level 6, AFRDI 142 and BIFMA X5.11 actually mean?
They answer different questions: AFRDI Level 6 says how hard a chair can be used, while AFRDI 142 and BIFMA X5.11 say how heavy its user can be.
AFRDI Level 6. AS/NZS 4438 grades height-adjustable swivel chairs at Level 4 (normal), 5 (heavy) and 6 (severe commercial use), and AFRDI's April 2025 loadings guide recommends all three for people up to 110 kg. Level 6 is a duty rating, not a big-person rating.
AFRDI 142 Rated Load. This certifies swivel chairs at 135, 160 or 185 kg, each as SS (single shift, about 8 hours a day, 5 days a week) or MS (multi-shift, 24/7).
BIFMA X5.1 vs X5.11. X5.1 (general purpose) was built around a 95th-percentile male of about 115 kg in its 2011 edition. X5.11 (2015, large occupant) is built around a 99th-percentile male at 181 kg and requires a seat at least 56 cm wide. A plain BIFMA claim is not a big-and-tall claim; the standard number is.
What is a Class 4 gas lift, and what does certified vs warranted mean?
A Class 4 gas lift is the heaviest common grade of chair cylinder, but the class is an industry label, not a BIFMA or AFRDI rating. Cylinder maker ergoDelux rates its Class 4 to 250 kg, while Officeworks sells a Class 4 replacement lift rated 160 kg, so ask for the kilogram figure. On Reddit, one reply to a Melbourne buyer over 170 kg reported gas lifts dying in about four months.
Certified and warranted are different numbers. Arteil, an Australian chair maker and retailer, describes two KAB heavy-duty chairs as certified to 150 kg yet warranted to 225 kg: the certificate records the load a chair passed testing at, the warranty what the seller will repair. As AFRDI 142 has no 150 kg class, that figure is the retailer's phrasing. Ask to see the certificate.
The Maxis's reinforced aluminium base, with a TÜV Rheinland-certified Class 4 gas lift tested for 20,000 cycles.

What are the downsides of each pick?
LiberNovo Maxis. Tall, slim sitters may float in it: Gadget Review's 188 cm, 82 kg tester called it "the better-built chair and the worse fit" for him. The armrests lock in width, but BTOD, Basic Tutorials and owners report the pads shifting when pushed, and the recline positions act as limits, not locks. The Airflow cushion is firmer, and two reviewers charged its battery about weekly with regular fan use. LiberNovo lists no AFRDI certification; the rating rests on BIFMA X5.11.
Herman Miller Aeron Size C. The conservative 159 kg figure is 22 kg below the Maxis, seat depth is fixed, there is no Herman Miller headrest, and its seat pan is narrower than X5.11's 56 cm minimum. An OzBargain poster at 180 cm and 85 kg found Size C too big overall.
Herman Miller Embody and Embody Gaming. 136 kg is firm and there is no headrest. Reviewed found the Embody Gaming backrest ends near shoulder height, and igor'sLAB's 177 cm, roughly 100 kg tester found the Embody's fixed-height lumbar sat too high and the seat narrow.
LiberNovo Omni Pro. 136 kg and 186 cm are hard limits. BTOD does not recommend the Omni line above 188 cm, and Tom's Hardware's 180 cm, long-legged tester found the 48 cm seat a little short.
What if you weigh more than 181 kg?
Above 181 kg, nothing in this guide is rated for you, and we would rather say so than sell you a chair rated below your weight. Just over 181 kg, look for an AFRDI 142 certificate at 185 kg multi-shift, though it leaves almost no headroom. Above 185 kg, the only AFRDI-certified class is the 300 kg bariatric option for fixed-height chairs under AFRDI 151.
FAQ
What is the best office chair for a heavy person in Australia?
Rated to 181 kg, the LiberNovo Maxis is the top pick at Aussie Chair: certified to BIFMA X5.11, with a seat about 58 cm wide and 52 cm deep. The Herman Miller Aeron Size B or C is the mesh alternative, rated 159 kg on Herman Miller's size chart.
How much weight can an office chair hold?
It depends on the standard behind the number. AS/NZS 4438 Level 4–6 chairs are recommended for people up to 110 kg, and many premium task chairs, such as the Herman Miller Embody, are rated 136 kg. AFRDI 142 certifies 135, 160 and 185 kg classes; BIFMA X5.11 chairs like the LiberNovo Maxis carry 181 kg.
What is the difference between heavy duty and bariatric office chairs?
Heavy-duty office chairs are height-adjustable task chairs certified for heavier users, for example under AFRDI 142 at 135, 160 or 185 kg, or BIFMA X5.11 at 181 kg. Bariatric seating goes further: AFRDI's 300 kg bariatric option is written for fixed-height chairs under AFRDI 151, trading adjustability for capacity.
What does AFRDI rated mean?
An AFRDI rating means a chair is certified against an Australian standard. Level 4, 5 or 6 under AS/NZS 4438 describes duty, from normal to severe commercial use, for people up to 110 kg. AFRDI 142 Rated Load adds weight classes of 135, 160 and 185 kg. Ask which certificate applies.
What office chairs are rated for 150 kg?
At Aussie Chair, the LiberNovo Maxis is rated 181 kg under BIFMA X5.11, and the Herman Miller Aeron Size B and Size C are rated 159 kg on Herman Miller's size chart (Size C reaches 181 kg on its 2026 EMEA sheet). AFRDI 142 has no 150 kg class; the nearest are 135 and 160 kg.
Are ergonomic chairs worth it for heavy people?
Yes, when the rating leaves headroom. Heavier sitters gain the most from real lumbar support, deeper and wider seats and armrests that open wide, and lose the most when a cheap gas lift fails. A chair rated at least 25% above body weight, a US retailer rule of thumb, is a sensible starting point.
Where can you sit-test a big and tall chair in Australia?
Specification tables shortlist a chair; your own back picks it. Try the LiberNovo Maxis Manual and Maxis Airflow beside the Herman Miller Aeron, Embody and LiberNovo Omni Pro at our Sydney showroom (Unit 11, 46-50 Wellington Rd, South Granville NSW) or Melbourne showroom (Shop 1a/280 Whitehorse Rd, Nunawading VIC). Visits are by appointment through our showrooms page, and we deliver across Australia and New Zealand.
