Herman Miller Embody Chair

The Embody is the chair we recommend to people who sit for eight to twelve hours a day and want a padded seat rather than mesh. Its seat and back are built as a layered “pixel” matrix: a flexible frame, a lattice of small plastic pixels, and a thin fabric skin. Each pixel moves independently, so pressure is spread across the whole contact area instead of concentrating under the sit bones and thighs. Herman Miller designed it with input from physicians and ergonomists, and the result is a chair that stays comfortable late in the day, which is exactly when lesser chairs start to hurt.

It also suits people who move while they work. The backrest is deliberately narrow so your shoulder blades and arms are free, the tilt keeps your eyes level with the screen as you recline, and the seat extends forward as you lean back so your thighs stay supported. Gamers choose the Embody Gaming version for its cooling foam and extra lumbar padding; the standard Embody is the better pick for an office or home-office desk.

Unlike the Aeron, the Embody comes in a single size with a wide adjustment range, so most adults from roughly 155 cm to 195 cm fit it well. The numbers below are Herman Miller’s published figures, rounded.

The adjustable seat depth is the key to the fit: slide it in until you have two or three fingers of clearance between the front edge and the back of your knee. If you are under about 155 cm you may find even the shortest setting a little deep — sit in one before you buy.

• Black / R Fabric / steel base — the classic all-black Embody with a graphite frame and black base.
• Carbon / R Fabric / steel base — a mid-grey weave on the graphite frame; the most popular option in our showrooms.
• Blue / R Fabric / white frame + titanium-alloy base — a saturated blue with a white backrest frame and lighter base.
• Grass Green / S Fabric / white frame + titanium-alloy base — a bright green with the white frame; the statement colour.

R fabric is a textured knit with a slightly open weave; S fabric is a denser, smoother weave. Both are rated for heavy daily use. The steel base is finished to match the frame; the titanium-alloy base is lighter in tone and pairs with the white frame. All configurations ship with standard carpet casters — add hard floor casters for timber, tile or polished concrete.

• Backfit — a dial on the back that changes the curve of the backrest to match your spine. Set it once, then forget it.
• Tilt tension and tilt limiter — tune the recline resistance, then cap how far back the chair goes.
• Seat depth — pull the handle and slide the seat pan forward or back, about 8 cm of travel.
• Arms — height-adjustable, and the arm pads slide in and out and pivot to meet your desk.
• Seat height — pneumatic lift with the range in the table above.

Both are on our showroom floors, and the choice usually comes down to seat feel and climate. The Aeron is a full mesh chair: cooler, firmer and offered in three sizes. The Embody is padded, softer on the sit bones, and warmer in summer because the fabric and pixel layer hold more heat than mesh. Every configuration ships fully assembled in the Herman Miller carton — fit the casters and you are done. Delivery is Australia-wide and to New Zealand, with same-day pickup from both showrooms when the configuration is on the floor.

What warranty does the Embody come with?

Twelve years as standard, with no upgrade needed. The warranty is handled by Aussie Chair here in Australia, with replacement parts held locally — full terms are on our Herman Miller warranty page.

Does the Embody come in different sizes?

No — one size with an adjustable seat depth and a wide seat-height range. It fits most adults from roughly 155 to 195 cm. If you are outside that range, the three-size Aeron may be the better fit.

Is the Embody hot to sit in?

Warmer than a mesh chair, cooler than a leather or foam executive chair. The pixel layer lets air move under the fabric skin. If heat is a concern, the Embody Gaming adds a cooling foam layer, or consider the mesh Aeron.

Does the Embody come assembled?

Yes. It ships fully assembled; you only fit the five casters, which takes a few minutes.

Can I try the Embody before I buy it?

Yes. The Embody is on the floor at both our Sydney and Melbourne showrooms, alongside the Aeron, so you can sit in them back to back. Walk-ins are welcome.
