Product details

The Herman Miller Sayl chair is the entry point into the Herman Miller task range, and it is the only chair in that range built on the engineering of a suspension bridge. Designer Yves Béhar drew on the Golden Gate Bridge and took the principle behind those structures — that a tower and a set of tensioned cables can carry an enormous span with almost no material underneath it — and applied it to a chair back. The Sayl's frameless 3D Intelligent suspension back has no rigid outer frame at all. A central spine carries the load and a web of moulded polymer strands radiates out from it: thick and dense low down where the sacrum needs support, thin and slack toward the outer edges where you want to twist and reach. The back holds your spine down the middle while leaving your shoulders free to move.

That approach is also why the Sayl looks unlike anything else on an Australian office floor, and why it sits below the Aeron and the Embody in the range — fewer parts, less material, no moulded frame to build. It suits people putting in a normal working day rather than a twelve-hour shift, who want genuine Herman Miller ergonomics and build quality without the visual bulk and weight of a large mesh chair, and who care what the chair looks like in a living room, a bedroom study or a design studio. Herman Miller sizes it for the 5th to 98th percentile of users. It is not the chair to buy if you want deep padding, a headrest, or the heavily engineered recline of a Cosm — Herman Miller does not offer a headrest for the Sayl, and the suspension back is firm by design.

  • 3D Intelligent suspension back — frameless elastomer with no perimeter frame, varying in thickness and tension across the surface so the edges flex when you twist. Herman Miller also builds a fully upholstered back version.
  • PostureFit sacral support is standard, holding the pelvis in a neutral position; a height-adjustable lumbar support with roughly 10 cm of vertical travel is available as an option.
  • Seat height approximately 38–56 cm across the low, standard and extended cylinder options; seat depth 41–46 cm on the adjustable-seat build.
  • Arm height 17–27 cm above the seat on the height-adjustable arms.
  • Rated to 159 kg (350 lb) user weight.
  • Materials — no PVC anywhere in the chair, and it is almost entirely recyclable at end of life.

Aussie Chair is an official authorised Herman Miller dealer, so every Sayl we sell is a genuine Herman Miller chair with local support behind it. We deliver across Australia and New Zealand. Try it at our Sydney (South Granville) or Melbourne (Nunawading) showroom.
